Hey you guys, this is your coach Andrea Dickerson here with IOwnADaycare.com. Today, I want to talk with you about what I wish I had known when I first started my childcare business.

When I started my childcare business, I had no clue about the person that I would become today. When I first started, I only desired to care for children. To be honest, it wasn’t even about the money. It was about me doing what I was passionate about and what I loved. When I began working in the childcare industry, I knew nothing about a few things that I’m going to share with you today.

In this blog post, I want to give you my three most important tips that I wish I had known so that I could have handled things differently in my business. As you read this blog post I hope that you identify with the top three principles that changed my life and I hope that you see that it doesn’t matter your business model. What matters is what you truly want and you knowing the smartest way to achieving what you truly want.

Tip#1 Owning and operating a childcare business is far from easy. It’s far from your typical business. If you’re striving for success and you truly want for it to be the best it can be, you must position yourself in the industry as the best.

Therefore, after working in the childcare industry for close to 20 years,  I am so excited and thankful that I made it through the journey of staffing, financial issues, enrollment battles and more, to this very date, I still face those same concerns but they are not as big of a challenge any longer, to get through my toughest times I wrote about them and then I created a book called Build it Big, Build it Better and put my 20 years of business systems, strategies, business building basics, enrollment, marketing, administration, operational, staffing techniques, and content in one book for childcare business owners to explore and to read to succeed.

Lesson #2 BIG THINKING

The first lesson that I wish I had known when I started my childcare business was to be a big thinker. The childcare industry is a billion dollar industry and I wasn’t concerned about tapping into the billion dollar industry. The only concern I had when I first got started was to just be the best. How many of you know that being the best without a financial plan leads you……. nowhere? I never want you to think that being the best kept secret is the way of building a big successful business. Being a business built on BIG systems is a plan for being the best!

You want to get your plans clear about how you are going to achieve your financial goals for your life and for your childcare business. In order to really impact your life and bank account, You Must Think Big. I realize that anything less than a million dollar plan – that’s 1,000,000 – was less than what I actually deserved. After starting, stopping, and starting over again, I realized that I needed to think big about my childcare business. Thinking big leads me to the next level, having a CEO mindset.

LESSON #3 CEO MINDSET

First thing I want to talk to you guys about is having a CEO and boss mindset.  I realized that when I first got started I was operating my business off of pure love and desire for caring for kids, I shorted myself every single day, whether it was I gave discounts lower than what it really costs me to be in business or I let parents get by with so many payment discrepancies. Whatever it was, I realized later that I had to have a CEO mindset and to be all about the business.

The first thing I had to do was re-position myself in my behavior, in my walk, and in my talk. To be honest, this was something that was hard at first, but I had to realize that I needed to work on high level tasks. I realized that in order for me to become a million dollar business owner I had to think like a millionaire, and do things that millionaires do, and to put myself in a millionaire arena. I began to hire coaches and be around people of influence to get me to that place.

LESSON#4 ENJOY THE JOURNEY AND CAPTURE MOMENTS

The last thing I learned to do, that I wish I had already been doing in my childcare industry, was… I wish that I was capturing my daily moments. I got so caught up in trying to be the best, trying to make things happen, until I forgot about my journey. I stopped loving the journey at points in my business. I stopped taking photos. I stopped capturing moments. I stopped journaling because I got caught up in the doing. I want to admonish all of you that are in the childcare industry or you’re starting in the childcare industry to capture moments. Capture your moments because you never know where those captured moments will take you.

I know for sure that when I began writing in the Build it Big, Build it Better book, moments that were integral to my success were captured and some were not. As you read through the book, you are going to hear and see how to make your way successful, how to elevate in the childcare industry, how to turn your business around, all through one manuscript, the Build it Big, Build it Better book. I admonish you to take a look at this book, to put in your library, and to read it, and read it, and read it. It’s a game changer, it’s a mindset shift, and it’s available for you if you want it. I want you to take a look at this low-cost investment and let me coach you to building it big. As I always tell my clients, bigger is better. CLICK HERE
