Are you a childcare business owner and you’re ready to master the habits of an effective childcare boss? What do I mean by that? Some of you are right at that place where it’s time out for  feeling as if you’re only here for the children, but you must now understand that you’re here to create the best business in your city that will offer children the best environment to learn and grow.

When you start thinking more about the bigger picture and less about the smaller picture, then you’ll begin to find yourself thinking about a few checkpoints to becoming a successful childcare boss.

Today I want to talk to you about how to be effective as a childcare business owner. I believe that in order for you to be effective you will definitely have to have a clear vision of what you want your business to produce. How many times have you pulled up to the drive-through and they say thank you for choosing boom, boom, boom. How can I take your order? You say uh, let me get, uh, let me get, uh. You’ve got so much going through your head, you’re looking at the menu and you’re indecisive.

Then by the time you order, you pull around to the window, you get your order, and you’re not even satisfied with your order. Why is that? You’re not satisfied because you didn’t have the right tools to make the right decision to be effective with what you ordered when you got to the window. I know that’s kind of off to compare childcare with the restaurant, but the point I’m making here is that you become less effective when you don’t understand what it is that you want. Understanding what you want your business to do for you, what you want your staff to do for you, what you want the children to achieve, and what you want the parents to know about your program is the key to you being able to be effective as a childcare business owner.

I’m going to give you a few of my strategies that I use to help me recognize when I’m being effective or not effective. Sometimes the biggest person that holds you back from your success is yourself.

To help you overcome those thoughts and concerns, here are four checkpoints to be sure that you will be effective as a childcare owner.

Here’s checkpoint number one

Are you organized enough to lead someone in a highly administrative role? Believe it or not, childcare program administration is a highly administrative role. It’s an industry like no other. You can’t take advice from other industries. You can’t even take their products and learn from them.

The more you know about what happens specifically in your industry, the better of a boss you would be. This is what I tell people all the time; childcare industry is an industry like no other. There’s nothing on earth compared to program management when it comes to childcare or preschool, Montessori, or daycare.

Either way, anyone that leads this role has to have the ability to be organized enough to lead someone else to take over the administrative tasks that come along in childcare. Just because a person can type doesn’t mean they are ready to be a program administrator.

Checkpoint number two, do you have a written training process ready to implement?

It’s so key and so important for those that you are working in your organization to have some type of blueprint to follow, some type of manual, some type of system to follow. When you give your admin team  manuals and systems and blueprints, it’s easier for them to be held accountable and it’s easier for you to teach them in the areas that they lack. Without having this type of system in place, can you imagine trying to hire ten people and train ten people at one time? You can’t be effective that way.

Number three, have you clearly defined your expectations in writing?

Job descriptions, job reviews, job explanations, whatever they may be, whatever terminology you use, it has to be clearly defined in writing. From the moment a person walks into your door to do business with you to the moment they leave, everything should be clear in writing. What’s written matters. Because it matters, create your own way for people to respect you by having your information provided to them in writing, especially your expectations.

When you are verbally communicating your expectations, sometimes people tend to forget or not take you as seriously. The pen is mightier than the sword. That means that if you are going to have a program that’s a force to be reckoned with and respected, it must be written.

Here’s number four; have you made a clear job description that is center specific?
